"Carly Cool"

Not sure exactly when it was that her daddy gave her that nickname.
Carly Cool.
But it stuck.
And it fits.

When she was 2 she told us that when she grew up she was going to drive across the country to live in  California.
Not sure where that came from exactly since we come from a long line of East Coasters.
But I believed her then.
And still do today.
She's our adventurous one.
Or, more appropriately, one of our adventurous ones.

I looked out the window early the other morning to see her and a certain 5 year old riding the waves together.
Not sure if they'd even eaten breakfast yet.
Practically had the whole beach all to themselves.

And suddenly I envisioned the two of them ziplining in a Costa Rican jungle or safari-ing together on the African plains.
When they grow up.
Which is happening much too soon if you ask me.
Beach living suits her though.
Not being one for dresses or frills.
She's happiest in a pair of gym shorts and a tee.
And if shoes are necessary...flip flops.

She wears 1001 pony tail holders on her wrist.
All the time.
Just in case a soccer game breaks out, I guess.
Always the prepared one she is.
Seems like just yesterday she was sitting in her little toddler chair in the sand watching the water from safe up on the shore.
Not today though.

Today it's boogie boards and pony tails.
Flip flops and catching waves.

And I'm going to enjoy every minute of "today.'
Because "tomorrow" will surely be here before I know it.

  2. This brought tears to my eyes. The description of your gal with her pony tail holders for an impromptu soccer game did me in. "Carly Cool" sure seems appropriate!
And yes, tomorrow sure comes fast, doesn't it?

  3. Love, love, love this post! Soooo fun and so full of life! Beautiful Carly!

I too grew up on the East Coast (Vermont) and in the poems I wrote as a child and in my dreams was to some day "ride my bike coast to coast". I never did ride my bike coast to coast. But I did jump in my car--with only $500 in my pocket, no job, and drove from Vermont to California when I was 24. I arrived in California with only the pennies in my penny jug to get me through--stayed with a friend and then a friend of a friend I never met before then. Got a wonderful job working for a publishing company that would take me through a wonderful career path in CA. I met so many lasting friendships during my 10 years there and don't regret a second of taking a chance on me--and just doing what I had dreamed to do.

Dreams are made to make happen--sometimes they happen in un-expected ways. But if we never give up--they do come true.

It will be fun to watch you find your way to this California DREAM. :)

    Love and God Bless.
